The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) has reported that the number of cardiac imaging examinations in Spain has tripled in recent years and cardiovascular imaging has become an essential subspecialty within the field of radiology .

The society issued a press release on 29 September about how radiology techniques can be used to help cope with this sharp increase in exams, including CT and cardiovascular MRI.

SERAM indicated that advances in CT have allowed CT coronary angiography to emerge as a noninvasive diagnostic alternative to conventional coronary angiography in a growing number of clinical scenarios with high-quality images. The society added that this technique makes it possible to study the anatomy and anatomical variants of the coronary circulation and to detect its disease. It also serves to assess and plan surgical and percutaneous revascularization procedures, among other advantages.

MRI meanwhile is growing in relevancy in routine clinical practice in cardiology. SERAM said that the capacities of MRI are in continuous development, particularly 4D flow sequences.

The press release can be found on the SERAM website.
