German start-up wins grant for deep-learning project

Munich-based start-up company Smart Reporting has received a multimillion euro grant from the Eurostars funding program to support development of its ImageReport image analysis and reporting software package.

ImageReport combines an image analysis system based on machine learning with "intelligent" structured reporting software, according to the firm. First, deep learning-based computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithms automatically analyze x-ray and CT images. These image analysis results are then fed into the reporting software, which guides the radiologist through the entire report, Smart Reporting said. In the final step, ImageReport generates semiautomated reports based on the image analysis results and information provided by the radiologist.

The reports are reproducible and can be used for big data analysis, the company said. Smart Reporting has teamed up on the project with Dutch automated medical image analysis developer Thirona and Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Smart Reporting said it will make ImageReport available to hospital radiology departments.
