The Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) and the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) have highlighted a recent event to promote primary and secondary prevention of breast cancer.
Over three days, SIRM and AIOM oncologists and radiologists met and educated the public on the importance of screening during the 15th edition of "Tennis and Friends – Health and Sport" in Turin, held in Piazza Castello from 12 to 14 September, the SIRM said in a post.
"Mammography is a safe, painless test with no side effects or contraindications," noted Dr. Nicoletta Gandolfo, president of the SIRM. "Instead, it is a potentially life-saving test that is offered free of charge to women as part of screening programs organized by the regions."
In the Piedmont region, for instance, only 53% of women regularly participate in breast cancer screening programs, while one in two women between the ages of 45 and 75 misses their scheduled biennial mammogram, the SIRM noted.
