How was imaging used across the world in the first wave of the pandemic? A keen desire to answer this question prompted three authors from Serbia, Croatia, and France to carry out a survey of 50 radiology departments in 33 countries. They won the Scientific Paper of the Year award in the 2021 EuroMinnies.
The idea for the project came in spring 2020, when Prof. Guy Frija, professor emeritus of radiology at the Paris Georges Pompidou European Hospital, was speaking with a radiologist friend in the Middle East who was conducting a lot of CT exams on COVID-19 patients without any access to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests.
Frija was surprised and concerned about this situation. In a video interview conducted on 19 April 2021, he explains how the group compiled the survey with the help and support of the International Society of Radiology (ISR) and the European Society of Radiology (ESR). The findings were published by European Radiology within three months of completion.
Frija, who is also past president of ESR, chair of EuroSafe Imaging, and co-chair of the ISR Quality and Safety Alliance, also provided an update on the latest developments at EuroSafe Imaging, including the publication of new referral guidelines for pediatric imaging on 15 April 2021.
